Samson and Delilah are teenagers in a tiny Aboriginal village in the Central Australian desert, and director Warwick Thornton devotes the first half of the movie to the fascinating details of their everyday lives, as well as to Samson's romantic courtship of Delilah, who simply can't be bothered by the persistent, orange‐haired boy ("Your husband!" her nana gleefully exclaims, while Delilah just rolls her eyes).
Unlike most boy‐meets‐girl stories, Samson and Delilah throws its would‐be lovebirds together for survival's sake. One of the many feats director Thornton pulls off in this beautifully observed, thoughtful picture is that the leads spend the entire movie without uttering a word to each other. Sometimes, words are just redundant.
