Peter MILLER

Peter Miller is an Australian music composer, sound-designer and digital image artist. Over his 30 year career, Peter has created numerous musical and soundscape works including The Violet Flame, Houdini and Love Vs Gravity and his recent 6 hour atmospheric magnum opus Strangeness & Charm which was commissioned by Qantas for their Sydney First Class Lounge. Peter's visual work has gathered much critical approval. His exhibition of mathematically created dark organic still images, biologika, was admired by DG Design & Creative Culture magazine for its “secret beauty hidden within numbers” and Science fiction writer Bruce Sterling personally chose Peter’s iterative image Red Portal for the cover of his 2008 anthology Ascendancies.

MICROSPORE

[Dream Worlds 30 second preview]

MICROSPORE, 2010, Generative Video Animation

Most people understand that mathematical principles are at work in the natural world in some way or other. We are all familiar with symmetry, repetition, and simple shapes and patterns. From snowflakes to eggshells, from sunflowers to starfish, the influence of mathematics is plain to see in nature.

My work deals with the deeper implications of this idea. From the very simplest of rules, I am able to make ‘lifeforms’ that seem to have characteristics far beyond what would seem to be reasonably expected from the modest instructions I have used.

This is a phenomenon called emergence; a complex behaviour that arises after only a relatively few simple rules are connected to one another. After a certain point in these rule-based systems, linear calculation breaks down entirely and the outcomes of the rules become literally impossible to predict. It is very likely that all life on Earth exploits similar mathematical processes to enable the extraordinary diversity that we see around us.

In Microspore the viewer examines some mathematically spawned ‘lifeforms‘ as if through a microscope. The floating, rotating, translucent, glowing, filamented creatures of this liquid world are numbers made corporeal. Much of what is seen in this world is phenomena that I haven’t explicitly coded, but instead has emerged spontaneously from the mathematics.

This version of Microspore has been specially re-designed for the Sanlitun screen and features my original music.
