Kate Richards’ versatile practice includes virtual worlds, interactive installations, datamapping software and combining live performance with new media. As a multimedia concept designer and producer, Kate delivers both large and boutique scale projects. Kate is the co-ordinator of the new Masters of Convergent Media at the University of Western Sydney.

TRAVELS IN BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION, 2010, Single channel video stereo sound. Produced in the Nocturnal games engine.

“Gondwana” is a fictitious and speculative ‘open cluster’ - a small type of galaxy - imagined here within the confines of our own galaxy, The Milky Way. “Gondwana” is visible in the southern skies, and has its own constellations that represent key themes of contemporary consciousness and culture. The Billies with their message of plenty, of succour and fullfillment; The Ball & Chain reminds us of hurdles and responsibilities that lead to success and its twin - retribution. The Emu represents the necessity for curiosity, intelligence and play. The Koala is harmonious, easy-going and domestic yet will spit and scratch if roused from sleepy reverie. The Laptop describes action orientated and motivated communication, whilst The Termite is a trickster, a shape-changer and a lively character who can manifest good or bad. The Plane represents our capacity for group and collective power, for working together and at the same time, for mob behaviour.

“Gondwana” is created using real astronomical visualisations from the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at Mt Stromlo, Canberra - these images are combined in aesthetic, striking and original ways prompting us to reflect on current memes of astrophysics, and the role of folk science in our encounters with the natural sublime. The video “Travels in Beautiful Desolation” is a flythrough of the galaxy, which is created inside a games engine by Melbourne developers ‘Nocturnal’. The title references Buzz Aldrin’s description of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon - “Beautiful, beautiful...magnificent desolation”.
